Shodokan Aikido Sheffield is celebrating after receiving a £500 donation from the MARS Refuel Drink Fund

Shodokan Aikido and Shimeijurasen Karate Club, in Sheffield, is celebrating after receiving a £500 donation from the MARS Refuel Drink Fund.

The club, which will celebrate its 20th anniversary this year, is run from a small dojo in the city.   Senior Aikido Instructor Scott Allbright currently runs three aikido clubs, a karate club and a wrestling club from the current premises, where they have been for seven years. The club is growing rapidly and currently has over 100 members, two of whom are European Bronze medallists.

Former World Champion, Scott says: “We are delighted to be awarded this funding as we desperately need to increase our floor space in order to accommodate all our members and those on the waiting list. To facilitate this we are currently in the process of moving the changing area to a mezzanine floor.

With this donation from the MARS Refuel Drink Fund we can now afford the high quality mats we require for the new floor space. This will be a great boost to the club as it means we can welcome new members and train longer. A big thank you goes out to MARS Refuel on behalf of the club.”

Research undertaken by MARS Refuel earlier this year revealed that almost a quarter of people feel that they don’t have enough money to start participating in sport, or to keep that involvement going.

The MARS Refuel Drink Fund was created to help people overcome the financial barriers and to play sport for longer by offering £500 awards to teams and individuals.

The MARS Refuel Drink Fund, which runs until September 30 2011, has £5,000 to donate each month. Applications can be made online at offering support with anything from equipment and travel costs, to improving training grounds and club houses.

The fund is open to residents of, and clubs and organisations based in the UK and Republic of Ireland only. Applicants must be 12 years or over and only one application will be accepted per person, club or organisation.

Mars Refuel is a great source of protein, carbohydrate, calcium and vitamin B.  It’s the milk goodness in Mars Refuel that provides the optimum 4:1 ratio of carbohydrate to protein that helps people to go 50% longer*.
