Every three months or so there is a grading. This allows students who have trained enough to have a go at attaining their next belt. What follows below is the complete kyu and dan grade syllabus. All the techniques are in Japanese with some English translation alongside the lower kyu grades.

8th Kyu, first red belt
More than 20 hours practice after starting

unsoku (foot movements)
koho ukemi (backward breakfall)
yoko ukemi (side breakfall)

Three techniques from a grab to the wrist.
aigamae katate dori - shomen ate, oshi taoshi, kote gaeshi
(same side regular grip - front strike, push down, outer wrist twist)

7th kyu, second red belt
More than 20 hours practice after 8th kyu

tegatana dosa (hand movements)
zenpo kaiten ukemi (forward rolling breakfall, on one knee)
gyakugamae katate dori - aigamae ate, hiki taoshi, tenkai kote hineri
(opposite side regular grip - same stance strike, pull down, inward wrist twist with body turn)

6th kyu, third red belt
More than 20 hours practice after 7th kyu

zenpo kaiten ukemi (forward rolling breakfall, standing)
koho ryote dori - gyakugamae ate
(grasp both hands from behind - opposite stance strike)
aigamae katate dori - waki gatame
(same side regular grip - side lock)
hanza handachi gyakugamae katate dori - tenkai kote gaeshi
(opposite side regular grip, defender kneeling - outer wrist twist with body turn)

5th kyu, yellow belt
More than 40 hours practice after 6th kyu

suwari waza (kneeling techniques)
shomen uchi - oshi taoshi osae
kihon waza (basic techniques)
atemi waza (shomen ate, aigamae ate, gyakugamae ate, gedan ate, ushiro ate)
kihon no tsukuri (entering to create an opportunity)
atemi waza - hontai no tsukuri (shomen ate, aigamae ate)
kansetsu waza (Joint techniques, grab and stab)
tegatana jodan no tsukuri (oshi taoshi, hiki taoshi)

4th kyu orange belt
More than 40 hours practice after 5th kyu

suwari waza
shomen uchi - oshi taoshi gyakute dori kote hineri osae
kihon waza
hiji waza (oshi taoshi, ude gaeshi, waki gatamae, hiki taoshi, ude hineri, waki gatamae)

3rd kyu, green belt

2nd kyu, blue belt
More than 60 hours practice after 3rd kyu

1st kyu, brown belt
More than 60 hours practice after 2nd kyu

randori no kata (all 17, uke without tanto)
kihon ura waza (counters)
atemi waza no ura - (waki gatame, oshi taoshi, gedan ate,
aigamae ate, tenkai kote hineri)
kansetsu waza no ura - (oshi taoshi, tenkai kote hineri, kote gaeshi,
waki gatame, tenkai kote gaeshi)
kihon no tsukuri
atemi waza, shoki no tsukuri (gyakugamae ate, gedan ate, ushiro ate)
kansetsu waza - hiji mochi no kuzushi

randori ho tai sabaki (against tanto)

1st dan, black belt
more than 100 hours practice after 1st kyu
goshin no kata (suwari waza, hanza handachi waza, tachi waza)
randori no kata (against a tanto)
tanto kakarigeiko and tanto hikitategeiko
(women and elderly people may be tori only, everyone else to do 2 minutes changing the tanto after 1 minute)

2nd dan, black belt
more than 200 days practice after 1st dan

goshin no kata (as for 1st dan plus tanto dori)
randori no kata (against a tanto)
tanto randori (3 x 2 minutes, changing the tanto after 1 minute each time)
women and elderly people may do the koryu nage no kata
omote and ura (14 techniques)

3rd dan, black belt
more than 250 days practice after 2nd dan

goshin no kata (as for 2nd dan plus tachi dori, yari dori, yari, kumitachi)
randori no kata (against a tanto)
tanto randori (4 x 2 minutes, changing the tanto after 1 minute each time)
women and elderly people may do the koryu nage no kata
as for 2nd dan plus 11 oyo waza (25 techniques)

4th dan, black belt
more than 4 years continuous practice after 3rd dan

8 techniques from tegatana no kuzushi
jodan no kuzushi (aigamae - ushiro ate, gyakugamae - ushiro ate)
chudan no kuzushi (aigamae - oshi taoshi, gyakugamae - hiki taoshi)
gedan no kuzushi (aigamae - kote gaeshi, gyakugamae - kote gaeshi)
koho no kuzushi (ryote - oshi taoshi, ryote - ushiro ate)

For those people taking a dan grade:
1. The examinee must have been taught by an official instructor.
2. For 4th dan and above, the examinee will be asked by the examiner to also demonstrate techniques from the koryu goshin no kata.
3. The examinee must verbally answer a question set by the examiner.
4. For 1st dan to 4th dan, within one week after the grading the examinee must submit a written report on a subject chosen by the examiner.
