Congratulations to Alumni Alice Walker in winning Bronze, Kata.
Both Alice & Ellie have continued their Aikido at University Clubs, Alice with Mo Mani (…in the background!!…) at Nottingham and Ellie is at Manchester (see previous post of the club).
Ellie Hughes from Bromley is now studying at Manchester University and has started a club with Luke Simmons from Brighton – both working with Steve Evans. She recently graded to 1st Kyu (though unaware of her grading!) and said ….weird grading without Sensei Chris Stamate giving ‘the look’!!
Check out their interview with Fuse TV :/ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oVOGyg1nfCA&feature=c4-overview&list=UUwIDZe2EkGJurHzzHuV4iaA
Randori only training will be this Thursday at Thomas Tallis Dojo, Kidbrooke Park. 7:30 – 9pm. 2nd Kyu and above. Cost is £5
There will be a Sport Aikido Session running at Thomas Tallis Dojo on Sunday 9th Feb 2014 with others planned during the year (see dates below).
Sport Aikido Sessions are independent of all groups and have been set up, simply to get the best players and coaches on the same mat at the same time. They will help kyu grade and aspirant Aikidoka become better kata and randori players and enable Dan grades to practice and hone their skills, as well as helping the top players prepare for national and international competitions.
It is hoped that these sessions will also help build trust and relationships and enable Aikidoka to share the latest technical and tactical developments. There will be a number of Embu (RNK, Goshin and Open) and Randori (Tanto, Kyoghi and Tai-sabaki) bouts for those who want to experiment and test their skills against players they don’t normally come against. It will also provide opportunities for those that want to learn/practice for judging, scorekeeping and referring. Training and support will be given on the day.
Everyone is invited to attend and everyone will be made welcome. No politics, no egos – just training, learning and great aikido.
A diverse and highly respected group of players will lead the various coaching sessions, these include;
Paul Bonett, Vanda Fairchild, Gitte Wolput, Jermaine Liburd, Jerome Chin-Aleong, Erik Dop, Paul Herbert, Natuley Smalle, Nicole Anson, Steve Evans, Dave Findlay, Tim Wolput, Shaun Hoddy, Ken Broome, Martin Livingston, Justin Gallagher, Michael McCavish, Scott Albright, Paul Wildish and Phil Newcombe.
Other coaches and top players within the UK and from the USA, Europe, Russia and Japan not on this list will also attend from time to time.
Minimum age is 18 and all aikidoka must have valid and up to date insurance and sign a register at the start of each session. The price of each session is £10. Everyone on the mat pays, no exceptions. Dates of the sessions:-
2014: 9th February, 30th March, 18th May, 6th July, 5th October
Please invite the people you teach and train with and encourage them to attend. Please join the Facebook group – Sport Aikido Sessions (if you have not done so already) and invite others who have not done so yet. Any questions or queries whatsoever, please email Sportaikido@gmail.com

Have you ever thought of trying a martial art? If so then this is the ideal opportunity.
This specially designed 6 week course will start by explaining what Aikido is and how it differs from other martial arts that you may know.
Over the weeks you will be carefully guided through how to breakfall properly and the basic body movements that are unique to Aikido. Aikido is a martial art involving a wide range of techniques that can be used to throw or immobilise an opponent and it helps the practitioner to develop fitness, confidence, improve balance and movement. Aikido is suitable for both men & women, as the principles rely on correct execution of the technique rather than brute strength.
Open to both men and women our beginners’ courses are held in a safe, well run environment. Our instructors hold BAB (British Aikido Board) instructor licences and insurance, they have all trained in Japan and are graded to Japan Aikido Association (JAA) qualification. Our club is a member of Sport Aikido GB and is one of the oldest Shodokan Aikido Clubs in the UK.
Beginners courses are an excellent way to try Aikido. Our beginners courses last six weeks and covers all the basic elements. To reserve yourself a place, please contact Erik Dop (4th Dan JAA) by email or by phone on 0781 – 715 1584. In the meantime if you have any questions we would love to hear from you.
Please make sure you reserve your place in advance as these courses are very popular and are sometimes over subscribed.
