Welcome to the Tonbridge and Tunbridge Wells Shodokan Aikido Club website. Shodokan Aikido is a structured martial arts system incorporating, physical education, sport and self defence. We are part of an international network of Aikido clubs who follow the teaching of Kenji Tomiki. His belief was that the old 'arts of war' model practiced by the Samurai was inappropriate in modern times due to it's emphasis on killing and maiming techniques, but a way had to be found to keep the techniques 'real' and effective. He found this by creating a way for his students to test their skills against each other using randori or 'free practice'. This allows players to oppose each others techniques, defending and counter attacking at will.

We have two junior (6+) training sessions in the West Kent area – 10am Saturday mornings in Tonbridge at the Swanmead Dojo, and Tuesday evenings 5.30 – 6.30pm in Tunbridge Wells at the new Tunbridge Wells Martial Arts Centre on St Johns Rd. There is also a senior class at the same venue from 6.30 – 8pm on Tuesdays. Our second senior class is at the Vale Road Methodist Church Hall on Thursdays 8 – 10pm. You can come and watch or take part at either venue; the first session is always free. For full details click on Training Sessions above.
